STAR WARS
CHAPTER VII
A NEW ENEMY... (pt6)
by
Raymond N. Cooper
"Damage report, Mister LaForge." Picard sat slumped in his chair on the
battle bridge. Even here, impact damage had caused wall plates to jump out of
their brackets, cluttering up the floor. Wires hung down from the ceiling,
sparking, fizzling. Data sat at Ops, trying to bring the ship's drift under
control; Worf stood at Tactical, banging his console when it wouldn't target
the enemy.
"Well, Captain, I think the Enterprise may have had it if they come back for
another go at us. We've lost all warp beyond warp three, we have no impulse
engines, our main phaser banks are down, life support is at forty-two percent,
and we have massive structural problems in the primary hull. And, on top of
all that, we may be facing a warp core breach. The containment fields are
failing."
"Is there any problem with the secondary hull?"
"No, sir. Apart from the life support and impulse engine bit, we're all
right here. They targeted the primary hull."
"Keep me informed, Mister LaForge."
"Aye sir." The comm line went dead.
"Mister Worf, any guesses as to why they stopped firing on us?"
"Yes, Captain. I believe they may have been firing at the saucer section as
that was where most of the life signs and firing weapons were located. They
only disabled our impulse engines on both sections so we couldn't escape. They
most likely stopped firing at us because we pose no threat to them now.They...
have no honour, Captain."
"Quite right, Mister Worf. Can you see any way of getting us out of here?"
"I believe Mister LaForge mentioned that we might have a warp core breach
very soon. I suggest we jettison the core at the enemy, and raise our shields
to as high as we can. Perhaps the Grissom can help us by reinforcing our
shields."
"Excellent idea, Mister Worf. Make it so, Number One."
"Aye, sir." Riker opened a channel to Engineering, and began to talk to
Geordi LaForge while Worf reconfigured the shields, and contacted the Grissom.
"Captain, I have the Grissom's Captain on the line."
"Thank you, Mister Worf." Picard turned to the main screen. "Hello,Captain
Chekov. We know you've been busy, and I thank you for that now. We may have a
way of ridding us of this enemy, but we're going to need you're help to carry
it out."
On the screen, Chekov answered. "We would be most happy to help, Captain.
It is the wish of every ship in Starfleet to come to the Enterprise's aid."
Picard smiled. "We are approaching a warp core breach as our containment
fields are failing. We are going to jettison our warp core at one of the enemy
vessels. Hopefully, this should make them think twice about staying in combat.
We will need your ship's shields to augment our own, so both ships can survive
the blast. Will you help?"
Chekov gave an order to fire to someone off the screen. "We'll only be too
happy to help, Captain. When should we join our shields?"
"We'll give you notification of when we're ready, Captain. But if you could
move into a covering position... just so they think you're defending a doomed
ship...?"
"Of course, Captain. We'll be there in a minute. Chekov out."
The line closed, and Picard turned to Worf. "Let's hope this works then."
Worf stared silently at his console.

Tyran stared out at the ships, first at the one called Grissom, then at the
one called Enterprise. He knew something was up, but he didn't know what. As
he stared, the Grissom swung around to cover the larger Enterprise from any
attacks that might come its way.
Larod smiled grimly at Tyran. "We have them on the run, Admiral."
"Don't be so sure," Tyran murmured, stroking his chin. "That ship the
Grissom is moving to cover should know its not in any danger at the moment;for
that matter, so should the Grissom. They should be trying to turn our
attention from the crippled vessel, not direct it towards them."
Larod peered down into the pit at Tactical. "Give me a scan of the
cripple."
Tactical turned away. "The upper hull is empty of all life forms. The
secondary hull seems to be experiencing some kind of anti-matter problem."
Larod turned back to his Admiral. "There. Their engine is about to
detonate. The Grissom is simply evacuating the personel."
"Then why are there no shuttles?" Tyran asked quietly. Larod turned back to
the window. "No, Captain. Those ships are planning a last ditch manoeuvre,
possibly either sacrificing the larger ship, or ejecting the engine. I think
we should pull back. Are the escape co-ordinates still locked into the slave
computer?"
This last sentence was spoken to a Lieutenant in the pit. He nodded.
"Take us out of here, Captain."
Larod faced the command pit crew. "Prepare for the jump to hyperspace.
Emergency jump co-ordinates Alpha. Inform the Hammerhead and the Lodestone to
switch over to their slave circuits immediately."
A chorus of "Aye, sir," came from below the Captain. "I hope you're right,
Admiral. This won't go down too well with the rest of the Captains."
"Oh, I'm right, Captain. T'Ruffen is ours. The stormtroopers will see to
that. And, anyway, we have enough ground vehicles to withstand a long seige,
at least until we can return."
The Grissom fired again, this time at the Deathwing, rocking the great ship
from side to side. Panels loosened from the impact and sudden change in
internal gravity structures, and twelve turbolasers failed. The tractor beam
generators also shut down. The Enterprise was free, but it couldn't go
anywhere anyway.
Tactical noticed the shields of the two enemy vessels link, meld, join into
each other. He brought this to the attention of his superior.
"Admiral, the enemy are joining their shields. I believe they are going to
make their last stand. Should we discontinue the jump?"
